# Clean version (/docs/product-guide/clean-version)

A transcript is verbatim by default: it keeps every word that was said. A **clean version** is a second transcript of the same project, in the same language, without filler words and repetitions.

| Verbatim | Clean version |
| ------------------------------------ | ----------------------- |
| So, uh, we we went to the, the beach | So we went to the beach |

Your verbatim transcript is always kept next to it and is never changed.

Ask for one when you upload [#ask-for-one-when-you-upload]

In the upload dialog, tick **Also create a clean version**. It is off by default. When the transcript is ready, the clean version is created in the same language and appears in the project's list of transcripts, labelled **Clean version**.

It starts within minutes of the transcript being ready. Opening the project starts it right away. If it does not appear, create it yourself, as described next.

Create one later [#create-one-later]

Any time after the project is ready, open the translate dialog in the editor or from the project list and choose the clean version. It is made from the verbatim transcript and keeps its language.

Using the API? Clean versions appear in a job's `transcripts` with `kind: "clean"`, and you can [download them](../api/results.mdx#choosing-a-transcript). Creating them is done in the app.

Translate from the clean version [#translate-from-the-clean-version]

When a project has a finished clean version, the translate dialog lets you choose what to translate from: the verbatim transcript or the clean version. Translating from the clean version gives subtitles without the stumbles.

* Only a **finished** clean version can be chosen. Until then it has no text to translate.
* When you **regenerate** a translation, it keeps the source it was made from, unless you choose another.
* A clean version is always made from the verbatim transcript, never from another version.

Good to know [#good-to-know]

* You cannot translate into the transcript's own language. That is the transcript itself, so the app refuses, and your corrections are safe.
* Regenerating a translation or clean version replaces its text. Corrections you made to that version are lost, so the app asks you to choose **Regenerate** on purpose. It also counts as an edit for [approval](./review-and-approval.mdx).
